The International Student SIM & Data Guide
Everything you need to know about getting a Canadian SIM โ carriers, data, phone contracts, and how to get the best deal.
Which Carrier Is Right for You?
In Canada, carriers are grouped into three tiers. Each tier has different network quality, pricing, and flexibility. Here's what you need to know.
Rogers ยท Bell ยท Telus
Highlight: Best network coverage across Canada, including rural areas and highways. These are the "big three" that own the towers โ everyone else rents from them.
Data: Plans typically start at 100GB/month
Avg. Price: ~$35โ50/month (Bring Your Own Phone plan)
Best for: Students who need reliable hotspot, travel frequently within Canada, or live outside major cities
Fido ยท Virgin Plus ยท Koodo
Highlight: Owned by the Big Three but sold at lower prices. Same towers, slightly fewer perks. Great middle ground for most students in cities.
Data: Plans typically start at 20โ40GB/month
Avg. Price: ~$27.50โ40/month
Best for: City-based students who are mostly on WiFi but need reliable data on the go
Chatr ยท Lucky Mobile
Highlight: Cheapest option, no contract, no credit check. Network may feel slightly slower during peak hours since prepaid customers are deprioritized on towers.
Data: Plans typically start at 25GB/month
Avg. Price: ~$19โ39/month
Best for: Students in their first month, or anyone waiting to get a job before committing to a monthly plan
How Much Data Does a Student Actually Use?
Most students in Canada average 50GB of data per month. Here's how to figure out which plan fits your life.
100GB โ The Student Sweet Spot
This is the most recommended plan for students. The average student uses around 50GB/month, so 100GB gives you plenty of buffer for hotspotting your laptop when university WiFi is slow (it happens), streaming on the bus, and using maps and social media throughout the day. You won't run out โ and you shouldn't need to pay for more.
โ Recommended for most students175GB โ For the Heavy User
If you're frequently crossing the Canada-US border, doing Uber or DoorDash on the side, or you don't have home WiFi, 175GB gives you the breathing room. Some 175GB plans also include Canada-US roaming, which means you can use your data in the States without extra charges.
Good for side hustlers & cross-border travelers250GB โ For Frequent Travelers
This tier usually comes with international roaming in 50+ countries. Most students don't need this unless you're traveling internationally multiple times a year or working a job that requires constant connectivity on the road.

First Month โ Get a Prepaid Plan
When you land, pick up a Chatr or Lucky Mobile prepaid SIM. It's cheap, there's no contract, no credit check required, and it gives you data immediately. Use this while you get settled โ open your bank account, find your footing, maybe land a part-time job.
Tip: Don't stress about getting the "perfect" plan on Day 1. Just get connected.
After 30 Days โ Move to the Parent Company
Here's the secret most students don't know: when you move from a prepaid carrier to its parent company (e.g., Chatr โ Rogers, Lucky Mobile โ Bell), carriers often give you exclusive switcher deals that aren't available to new customers. Think: $35โ40/month for 100GB, free international calling minutes (1,000+ mins to select countries), or $20 off for your first 5 months.
Tip: Always ask "Do you have a deal for customers switching from [prepaid brand]?" โ this single question can save you $10โ20/month.
Should You Finance a Phone on a Contract?
Canadian carriers let you finance a new phone directly on your plan. Here's how it works and what we actually recommend.
Finance (Buy)
How it works: 24-month contract at 0% interest. Your phone cost is split across 24 months and added to your monthly bill. After 24 months, the phone is 100% yours โ nothing more to pay.
Example: iPhone 16 ($1,399) โ ~$58/month for 24 months on top of your plan
Pro: You own the phone after 2 years. 0% interest means you pay no extra cost.
Con: Locked to that carrier for 24 months (you can pay off remaining balance early to leave)
Lease (Rent)
How it works: 24-month contract, usually lower monthly payments than financing. At the end of 24 months, you choose: return the phone OR pay the remaining lump sum to own it.
Example: iPhone 16 ($1,399) โ ~$30/month for 24 months on top of your plan. After two years, either return the phone or pay ~$679 to own it.
Pro: Lower monthly payments, good if you like upgrading phones
Con: You don't own the phone at the end unless you pay the buyout
